New Kangy Angy Rail Maintenance Facility Officially Open

Project status

According to NSW Government

Major construction of the new maintenance facility at Kangy Angy, which will service and maintain the New Intercity Fleet, is now complete.

The facility includes offices, amenities, staff parking and ancillary buildings as well as flood free access for local residents via a new bridge that connects Enterprise Drive to Orchard Road.

In October 2020, the first New Intercity Fleet train travelled from Sydney to the new maintenance facility site.

Maintenance facility operations

The maintenance facility is operated by UGL Rail, part of the RailConnect consortium which is responsible for maintaining the new trains. John Holland, the contractor responsible for the design and construction of the maintenance facility on behalf of Transport for NSW, have now completed their work and no longer manage the day-to-day operations of the site.

Minor work will continue over the coming months, including construction of a drivers amenities building near the train wash building.

This work will take place during standard construction hours. In the event that work cannot be carried out during standard construction hours, residents will be notified in advance.

New Signalling for the Sunshine Coast Line

Train safety project commenced on Sunshine Coast Rail Line

According to Railway Technology

Australia’s Queensland Government has announced that the Sunshine Coast rail line, the longest line on the Queensland Rail City network, is being equipped with new signalling technology to enhance track safety.

Australia’s Queensland Government has announced that the Sunshine Coast rail line, the longest line on the Queensland Rail City network, is being equipped with new signalling technology to enhance track safety.

The $43m project will involve 60 workers for the installation of European Train Control System (ETCS) level one technology between Caboolture and Gympie North.

This will subsequently follow the major construction work on stage one of the jointly funded $550m Sunshine Coast Rail Duplication project, which will take place in the next 12 months.

The Queensland Rail project includes the installation of 43 new equipment cubicles over 120km of track and upgrading of 130 signal equipment cubicles.

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said: “Lead contractor Rail Control Systems Australia has more than 30 people working on this project out of Cooroy and they’re employing electrical apprentices who receive on the job experience in railway signalling control systems. RCSA has also brought on local subcontractors based here on the Sunshine Coast at Landsborough and Pelican Waters. Across the whole project, more than 60 jobs are being supported, including in trades such as electrical, signalling, engineering and traffic control.”

He noted that the project is supporting local jobs and preparing the North Coast rail line up for improved services between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane ahead of Cross River Rail’s opening in 2025.

Bailey added: “Installing ETCS technology on the line means we’ll be able to put the newer NGR class trains into services up to Gympie. Integrating ETCS and Automatic Train Protection (ATP) systems along the line is also an important step in preparing for track duplication between Beerburrum and Landsborough.”

After completing the installation along the line and onboard trains, the new infrastructure will offer engineering control to ensure that trains are halted before the red signal.

Requirements of railway fire safety standard EN 45545-2

EN 45545-2 defines a classification system that specifies requirements for fire behaviour of materials and products used in trains. In effect since 2013 the European railway standard for fire safety replaced numerous national standards such as NF F 16-101 and -102, BS 6853 or DIN 5510-2.

The EN 45545-2 application categories are separated into four different train types, e.g. standard vehicles or special trains with sleeping cars. According to EN 45545 there are four different environments the trains are running in, depending on how many kilometres the route is leading through a tunnel. The combination of train types and environments is essential for the classification of hazard levels. A standard train going less than one kilometre through a tunnel will be classified as HL1. The security level HL3 is the highest hazard classification.

Furthermore there are different requirements. These are essentially based on the type of product. Our products are part of the requirement sets R22 and R23, seals and hoses“. In requirement set R22 we meet the requirements for indoor and in R23 for outdoor applications.

Fire resistance of fire barriers acc. to EN 45545-3

The European railway standard for fire safety EN 45545-3 regulates the fire resistance of fire barriers. The requirements and measures defined in this part of the standard aim to protect passengers and staff in railway vehicles against onboard fire incidents.

Australian Rail Standard and the EN45545-2

The four part Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board “RISSB standard” represents Australia’s first ever set of national, harmonised requirements. It leverages best practice from Europe and sets that within a performance based framework.

The European approach to rolling stock fire safety is focused on fire prevention and in this regard, the approach is aimed, under the hierarchy of controls, as implementing the highest order control that is possible.

This review undertaken as part of this paper has illustrated the holistic nature of the RISSB standard, and shown that it is consistent with leading existing international practice. In that regard, it is considered that the new RISSB standard will provide the Australian rail industry with an excellent tool for managing the safety, asset damage and service disruption risks that rolling stock fires pose.
