New X’Trapolis 2.0 trains at Alstom’s Ballarat

According to the AGE Twenty-five new Ballarat-built trains will be running on Melbourne’s suburban network within five years under a deal with French rolling stock manufacturer Alstom worth $986 million.

Two days before the state budget, acting Premier James Merlino and Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll unveiled plans on Tuesday to start building the factory next year and have them running on the network by 2026.

The six-car trains, which will start to replace the ageing Comeng Fleet, are required to be built with a minimum 60 per cent of local content. The trains will be designed to carry 1200 people, well beyond the Comeng capacity of about 760.

The trains will run everywhere on the network except for the new Metro Tunnel. New high-capacity metro trains being constructed as part of a delayed $2.3 Billion program are set to operate through the tunnel by the time it opens in late 2025. “We are currently the only state that actually builds trains, builds trams and builds buses. Often our factories are supplying other public transport modes to other states,” Mr Carroll said.

Mr Carroll said the new trains would be lighter and more energy efficient and the doors will be wider in a bid to reduce wait times at stations, while carriages will be roomier and more accessible for people with wheelchairs and prams. He said the contract would deliver a major boost to regional manufacturing.

Rail Earthing Products for the Australian Market

An earth electrode system, professionally designed by competent Engineers, is essential to ensure the safety of personnel and the protection of equipment from dangerous voltages in and around substations.

  1. A.N. Wallis are able to offer earth electrode system designs and associated testing services using the most up-to-date equipment and design software ‘CDEGS’. All this is carried out by competent and highly experienced Electrical Engineers and Technicians.

Earthing System Design Considerations

An earth electrode system should be designed to safely dissipate fault current or other unwanted electrical current to the general mass of earth. This could include power transmission and distribution, static dissipation, lightning protection as well as other associated systems.

The main considerations of an earth electrode system design should be:

  1. Is the systems safe and suitable for the purpose for which it is intended?
  2. Is the system rated to carry the designed fault currents?

Structural Lightning Protection

Structural Lightning Protection systems are installed to minimise the risk of damage to the external & internal parts of the structure, including the electrical and electronic equipment from a lightning strike and reducing the risk of injury to humans by safely discharging the high voltage to the earth system. The external lightning protection attracts the lightning discharge and conducts it safely to earth and the internal lightning protection, with use of transient surge protectors, minimises the damage to sensitive equipment and bonding of conductive services ensureA3 a safe path to earth.

ATUM HEATSHRINK TUBING

ATUM tubing is radiation-crosslinked, heat-shrinkable, and adhesive-lined to provide environmental sealing in a wide variety of electrical applications.

The product is typically used to seal connector backshells and cable breakouts and to repair damaged cable. ATUM has an internal adhesive coating that, when heated, melts and flows to form a positive environmental seal. The coating adheres to the outer tubing and the surface below, creating an excellent barrier to moisture penetration.

The adhesive bonds to a wide variety of plastics, rubbers, and metals, including PVC, polyethylene, rubber, and aluminium. Because the tubing and adhesive are flexible, the moisture seal withstands bending of the substrate.

This flexibility makes ATUM tubing ideal for cable repair. ATUM tubing is available with expansion ratios of both 3:1 and 4:1. These high expansion ratios make it possible to repair cables without removing connectors. Just a few sizes of ATUM tubing cover a wide range of substrates. ATUM is UL-recognized at 110°C, 600 V
